James watched through the window as the couple got out of their car. They walked at a quick pace, eyes directed toward the ground. The young man kept looking behind them. James let the curtain fall back in place and took his spot behind the registration desk. With Barry and Karen on vacation, the Applewood Hill Bed and Breakfast’s guests were under his care. And it looked like this couple was definitely in need of care. He straightened his suit coat and waited for them to approach.

Tall and thin, the young man reminded James of his bookish friends in the chess club back in England. The woman, a bit shorter, wore her chestnut colored hair just below her shoulders. Her rumpled clothes matched the mood of her posture. She walked with her head down as if afraid to look him in the eye. James glanced upward. God, let me be your hands to this young couple. Whatever they are running from. Show yourself their helper.

The man whispered to the woman before he stepped up to the desk. “Our friend Isabella said there was a woman here, Karen, who might be able to help us.”

Who is Isabella? The name sounded familiar. “Karen and her husband are on vacation. Maybe…”

The woman grabbed the man’s hand and pulled him towards the door. “I told you. We have to get out of here. Now.”
