version of Christmas with the Colburns.

I’ve always loved Christmastime. My family moved a lot when I was growing up, so our Christmases never looked the same. I remember the winters in cold climates most fondly.

One year we lived in Clovis, New Mexico. There was a snowstorm, and we were snowed in—great fun when you’re nine! My parents gave us Monopoly for Christmas. I had one of those huge calculators with the paper roll like accountants use. We played Monopoly all day, and I made little receipts for everyone. Yeah, I’m cool like that. Ha!

christmas-with-the-colburns-cov-erI wrote my first novella, Christmas with the Colburns, during summertime, so it felt like I had Christmas twice last year. Christmas with the Colburns is the 4th installment in my Uncharted series, which began with The Land Uncharted. My goal was to write Christmas with the Colburns in such a way that if you’ve already finished the first 3 books in the Uncharted series, this will be the cherry on top, and if you haven’t read any of the Uncharted books yet, this story works as a standalone.

Here’s a little about the story: It’s Christmastime in Good Springs, and Lydia Bradshaw is eager for the light at the end of her year—the Colburn family’s big holiday gathering. When she discovers none of her siblings are coming back to the village this year, she believes Christmas will be ruined. As Lydia faces a gloomy holiday in the Colburn house, an unexpected discovery brightens her favorite season. Will it be enough to rekindle the light of Christmas?

But enough about books. How about some nostalgic Christmas photos?

Here are a couple gems from my past…

Plastic bracelets and a Bugs Bunny doll. Yes!

I *think* that is a train set I’m unwrapping. This might have been one of those funny family moments when the gift tags got switched. Awkward!

  1. No awkward moments that I can remember, but one incident I’ll never forget is one year when my grandmother was visiting from Pennsylvania. She slept in my bed and I slept on an army cot. I was around 9 or 10. I was often one of the first of four siblings to be awake, and when I got up that morning and took my first step I feel over. My leg had fallen asleep. I don’t remember if my fall woke up anyone or not, but it was a weird experience for me.

  2. I was a very shy little kid. My cousin dressed in a Santa suit and wanted to give me an orange. I told him to just put it over there and I would get it. I didn’t want to take a gift from a stranger in a red suit.

  3. As the oldest of ten we had lots of crazy Christmas. Memories. We did get gifts mixed up . The most fun was watching the younger ones open their gifts.

  4. I’m sorry that I don’t have any funny or awkward moments from Christmas as a child. I come from a violent and abusive childhood. My parents got my brothers presents and made me sit and watch them open the presents every year.

  5. Awkward moment… the year my parents gave me underwear for Christmas. Brother found it hilarious, and I just wanted to crawl under a rock. To clarify… it wasn’t my only gift and did not ever happen again.
