Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12: 1-2

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus surprised people with the authority of his teaching. Turning their ideas of how they should treat one another upside down. Over and over He pointed out what they were used to doing and replaced it with a bolder direction.

“You have heard… ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment…” Matthew 5: 21-22
“You have heard…’Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28
“You have heard…’Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’  But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Matthew 5: 38-39
“You have heard…’Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:43-44
Christ always called for more than the letter of the law. The letter of the law is religion and Christ condemned religion. More is a matter of the heart and Christ is always after our hearts.
He hasn’t changed. The circumstances today include the internet, hackers, cyber neighbors, cyber bullies, terrorists, androids, and movies but the heart of the matter is still the same.
Christ asks us to respond with more than the accepted or expected norm. Purity instead of “sexual freedom”, forgiveness instead of revenge and love instead of hate.
And He did not qualify it with an “if they deserve it”. It’s about our heart responding to His heart instead of to the world around us.
“This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”  Jeremiah 31:33
Where do you need a “more” approach to life?
