My Publishing Journey

After reading a book by one of my favorite authors, I thought I wish I could write characters like her. But up to this point, I had only written articles, devotionals, poems and children’s stories.

The next week at my critique group, a fellow critiquer asked for more detail in my children’s book. But then it would be a novel. I chewed on that one a while. Then I said, Why not? I wrote the first words and the rest flowed. My first novel was born.

The second book I wrote is Where Hope Starts. (Originally, Bruised Reed).

Since the first draft, it has gone through a multitude of edits. I have lost count how many times I have been through this manuscript.

I entered it into a contest, which it did not win, but it did send me back to the editing. I knew it could be better. I committed to faithful attendance to my writing and critique group. I committed to submitting my other writings on a regular basis. And though none of these things were published, I learned and I prepared.

Then God provided an open door. At a writer’s conference, I spoke with the acquisitions editor for CrossRiver Media. She liked my idea and invited me to send it in. I went home and once more, went through my book making more improvements before I sent it on its way.

CrossRiver Media became the home for Where Hope Starts

Since then, I have worked to build my platform. Developing my website, writing blogs, filming videos, always learning and trying something new. Some days it feels like no progress is being made, yet when I list out everything I have learned and done in the last 18 months, I surprise myself.

Along the way, I had a devotional included in a compilation: The Benefit Package also published by CrossRiver Media.

Now we are in the home stretch. Release date is September 14th. My blog tour starts Monday, September 9th. And if you were to catch up with me, you might find me pinching myself, asking “Is this really happening?”

What has been your biggest “Is this really happening?” moment?

  1. When I got my manuscript back for ANOTHER round of edits I wasn't planning on, and I thought, 'Is this really happening?'

That's partially in jest, partially reality. For the record 🙂

Good for you! I'm excited to read more about it!
