Strong Winds

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Philippians 1:2-4 (NIV)

This last week we had a day of strong winds. Forecast said 30 mph. A friend heard up to 60mph gusts. Not sure what it ended up being, but while on the highway I took one hand off the wheel for minute and a strong gust hit the side of the car. Felt like being slammed into by another car (minus the crunching noise and spinning out of control).
We pulled into the parking lot of a store and the cart corral, full of carts, slid straight toward the side of our car. The anchor wasn’t quite strong enough. We sped up before becoming a casualty. Walking across the parking lot, we leaned into the wind. My daughter asked later if she had opened up her coat to catch the wind, what would have happened. Uh…let’s not test that one!
Looking outside the window shortly before we checked out, we could see snow blowing so hard it looked like clouds at ground level. Within minutes, complete calm and sunshine. Crazy!
The storms of life are kind of crazy, too. At least when you get past them and look back. There are a few things you should keep in mind as you navigate those windy days.
Don’t take your hands off the wheel. Continue in those disciplines that keep you grounded—prayer, worship and time in the word. Even when life gets so crazy it seems impossible to find the time and energy to do so.
Be on guard.Don’t let the enemy slip into your camp. He will try and bring distractions your way. He will try and hit you from the side – out of the left field—when you aren’t paying attention!
Keep a right perspective. What the enemy means for your destruction, God uses for your blessing. God is in the business of redemption.
It won’t last forever, and when it’s over, the sun will seem to shine even brighter. You’ll know God more intimately.
So the next time a storm comes your way—and they will—stay anchored in the One who holds you safely in His hands.
What helps you stay anchored during the windy times of life?

  1. Great reminder, Angela! I've found that praying friends and family, and meditating on God's Word (Philippians in particular) help me. Also doesn't hurt, of course, that I'm an optimist LOL.

    Thanks for posting!
