Q is for Quail

When the Israelites left Egypt, they had an open invitation into the Promised Land. Until they started shaking in their sandals and did not believe that God could overcome their enemies (Come on– don’t you remember the red sea closing on top of the Egyptians after you walked across on dry land?).
Hello wilderness. Forget Survivor, these guys had to stick it out for 40 years. Getting voted off the island didn’t mean they went home, it most likely meant the earth was going to swallow them up.
Over and over, God provided for their needs and overcame obstacles for them. Still they murmured and complained. It was sooo much better in Egypt where they had to slave away building pyramids.
It didn’t take long before they started complaining about the menu. God provided manna. They continued to complain. They wanted meat. I think they saw all the cows being saved for sacrifices and they wanted some beef, too.
So God sent them quail. Filled the camp with them. Until they started complaining again. He gave them what they asked for and they complained. The audacity of those people!
Whoa. Hand me the mirror. Is that me I see complaining after God just gave me the very thing I asked for? Yep, that’s me. Ouch. God forgive me. Let gratefulness always be the expression of my heart.
God continually had mercy on the children of Israel. Over and over they messed up and He came through for them – often after a bit of discipline – but He never forgot His children.
And He is faithful today. I would be stuck in my box if He wasn’t. His mercies are new every morning.

  1. Good one Angela! Just saw one of those "posters" on a friend's facebook post, and it said something like, "let go of what you have and wait for what you deserve". That's a little scary if you think about it…we don't deserve anything, except punishment, it's only God's grace that gives us anything good. So I'm going to remember to be thankful for the "quail" He provides and not wait for what I deserve….
